Founded in July 2005, the Deep South Alpaca Connection is a regional affiliate of the national Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA). We are dedicated to public awareness and education about alpacas and the alpaca industry. It is our goal to share the alpaca lifestyle with others and to promote alpacas in our three member states, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Alpacas are beautiful, gentle, and valuable. Their fiber is a luxury fiber, often compared with cashmere. Interestingly, alpacas’ fleece quality and quantity are determined more by genetics and nutrition than by climate. Alpacas are easy to care for when compared with most other livestock. They require shearing once each Spring, and can be housed comfortably with 7-9 alpacas per acre due to our long growing season. Alpacas are a wonderful addition to rural life or the perfect antidote to bustling city life. The alpaca business can be rewarding, both personally and financially. Breeders may receive favorable tax advantages as well.

Alpacas have been raised successfully in our region of the country for over ten years. There are some unique requirements for raising alpacas in our hot and humid climate. If you are interested in raising alpacas in the South, we welcome you to spend some time with our members and find out how they manage their alpaca herds. Also, consider choosing alpacas from our region to start your herd. Alpacas who have been born here or are already acclimated to this climate will be much easier for a new breeder to manage. The Deep South Alpaca Connection is made up of small to medium sized farms in Lousiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
